CALI lessons aren’t just for finals preparation – there’s actually many available that can be used either to prepare for that first week of class or, especially in the legal research course realm, can be used in lieu of a casebook.
As an added benefit, when students use CALI lessons throughout the semester, they are comfortable with the environment and have their registration all good to go when it comes time for finals preparation and that’s one less stressor for them. And one less in line to get their authorization code from you.
The following are a group of lessons that I think would be very appropriate and useful for new 1Ls. These could be assigned during orientation or as part of an ASP course.
- Where Does Law Come From by Diane Murley
- Anatomy of a Case by Brian Huddleston
- How to Brief a Case by Edward Martin
- Learning Legal Analysis Through Its Components: Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion – IRAC by Peter Honigsberg
- Plagiarism – Keeping Out of Trouble by Rebecca Trammel
